REGENT and NSI integrate Squire Seaglider drone and Arowana UUV in live Maritime Big Play scenario

November 4, 2026
  • Squire, REGENT’s Seaglider™ drone, showed it can act as a mobile gateway for other uncrewed vehicles.
  • By retasking the Arowana UUV mid-mission, Squire let operators act on new intelligence as it arrived, without recalling the vehicle or breaking its mission.

North Kingstown, R.I., November 4, 2026 — REGENT and NSI integrated REGENT’s Squire Seaglider drone with NSI’s Arowana unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) during the recent Maritime Big Play Pacific off San Clemente Island in California. The demonstration showed Squire retasking Arowana while underway and handing off control across a mixed fleet of uncrewed systems.

Squire™ is a Seaglider™ drone that flies in ground effect below radar line of sight at up to 70 knots, with a planned range of more than 100 nautical miles and a 50-pound configurable payload for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), logistics, search and rescue, and anti-submarine warfare. The NSI Arowana is a high-performance autonomous unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) engineered to deliver persistent maritime capability across defense, border security, critical infrastructure protection and commercial operations.

The integration of the two crafts successfully showed how operators can easily sense the underwater environment, make sense of the difficult battlespace and act on new intelligence with near instantaneous retasking without surfacing the vehicle.

“This is what partnership looks like when it is tested rather than described,” said Becky Russo, Vice President, Defense at REGENT. “Our teams integrated across vehicles, controllers and networks and delivered a result our government partners could see for themselves. We are proud to work with NSI and look forward to advancing the partnership.”
“Maritime Big Play gave us the chance to prove, in real conditions, that Squire and Arowana work as one system,” said Ed Rule, CEO of NSI. “Retasking an undersea vehicle mid-mission through a gateway vehicle is the kind of flexibility the fleet needs, and working alongside REGENT made it possible.”

One team across air, surface and undersea

Sponsored by the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research & Engineering (OUSW(R&E)) , Maritime Big Play Pacific brought industry and government teams together to test uncrewed maritime, air and command-and-control systems in a realistic coastal environment. Operating in the island’s leeward waters, REGENT and NSI tested their integrated systems against a scenario built to stress them with changing tides, shifting visibility and weather.

The teams launched Arowana from a support vessel and sent it on a 2-mile transit toward a simulated high-value unit. While it was underway, operators used Squire as a mobile gateway to update Arowana’s tasking in real time as new intelligence arrived. The teams also demonstrated guidance of the UUV over a fiber-optic tether, which keeps control links intact where radio communication is limited.

The combined team also practiced beyond-line-of-sight handoffs from a short-range controller to a longer-range ground control station. They verified that line-of-sight radio links and Team Awareness Kit (TAK) integration worked across the uncrewed aerial systems on the range. TAK gave operators a single common picture of every asset.

The result was a mixed fleet of undersea, surface and aerial vehicles from multiple providers operating as one team, with tasking and control passed between systems during the mission rather than reset between runs.

About REGENT

REGENT is pioneering the future of maritime mobility through the development and manufacturing of Seaglider™ vessels, high-speed hydrofoiling wing-in-ground effect (WIG) craft that operate over the water within a wingspan of the surface, combining the speed of an aircraft with the convenience of a boat. A dual use company based in Rhode Island, U.S., REGENT has attracted growing military and commercial demand, including an expanded $20 million US Marine Corps contract for its Viceroy platform, rising interest in its autonomous Squire platform, and a global order book spanning six continents with multiple years of manufacturing capacity booked. REGENT has secured more than $340 million in funding commitments from investors including AE Ventures, Mare Liberum, Valor Equity Partners, Lockheed Martin, Japan Airlines, and Abu Dhabi’s Strategic Development Fund, with manufacturing financing from Erebor Bank.
